Aron Demetz
Aron Demetz's modern wood carving incorporates traditional techniques and modern materials to create art pieces that have distinctive physical characteristics. His work incorporates three different techniques-carving as well as burning and then covering with resin-to create a reinterpretation of the material's texture and spirituality. Michael Pacher
Austrian artist Michael Pacher combines wood carving and painting. His entire life was spent in the South Tyrol region. His wood carvings are a perfect illustration of the German Gothic style. His art works reflect the Italian Renaissance, and his paintings were among the first to introduce German-speaking artists to the techniques of Renaissance art. His St Wolfgang Altarpiece, which is among the largest altarpieces ever created in European art is his most renowned artwork.
Pacher's wood sculpture shows the influence of the northern Italian sculpture and painting. It has many similarities with Andrea Mantegna. Pacher's fusion of Italian Renaissance styles with Northern Gothic realism, however, led to the creation of an individual style of painting that is distinct his unique.
Jorg Zurn
A life-sized wooden sculpture of Archangel Michael by Jorg Zurn was sold for $250,000 in an art show in New York in 2002. Zurn was the eldest son of sculptor Hans Zurn the Elder. Jorg Zurn apprenticed to his father, and was also educated in several workshops in southern Bavaria.
Zurn was Zurn was a German Baroque artist who carved altars and other religious items. One of his masterpieces includes the five-storey High Altar of the Virgin Mary located within the Church of Saint Nicholas in Uberlingen. While the style of the altar is influenced by elements of early Baroque, it has an energizing design that is that is similar to German Gothic sculpture.
Veit Stoss
Veit Stoss was an internationally acclaimed woodcarver. Many of his clients were from Europe which included Portugal and Italy. His sculptures were hugely carved figures and scenes from the lives of Christ and Mary. They express the passion of the late Gothic culture. Giorgio Vasari described his work as 'a wonder in wood.'
The boxwood sculpture Veit Stoss carved shows an affinity with other great masterworks, and was created just a few years after the Cracow Crucifix. It is possible that it was made prior to or following the corpora of Nuremberg. The complex design and intricate technique of sculpturing make it a fascinating object to examine.
Veit Stoss's Crucifixes demonstrate an original way of representing. They are a blend of naturalistic observation and exaggerated style. Scholars speculate that Stosss studied in Cracow to carve athletic anatomy, or perhaps the doctor he worked with studied dissections.
Barbara Hepworth
Barbara Hepworth is one of the most influential artists of her generation. During the 1930s, she lived in a tiny home located in St Ives with her friends. While she struggled to make carvings the shapes she wanted, she kept working on her drawings at night. These drawings were a way for her to express ideas she was unable to express with three dimensions. These drawings were influenced strings-like elements and colours, and aimed to create an abstract harmony.
Hepworth was inspired by her childhood fascination with the natural forms and textures. Her love of landscapes informed her work in later years. In 1943, she wrote that her work was shaped by the natural landscape. Unsatisfied with flat backgrounds, she photographed her artworks in the natural setting.
